Software Defined Radio - Switching Power Supply KDG-SNT1

KDG-SNT1
Switching Power Supply KDG-SNT1

Overview

Power supply modules for more than 50 W have to be equipped with a power factor correction circuit according to the european regulation EN 61000-3-2. The simple rectification with capacitor filtering is no longer allowed. This way the harmonics of the current in the mains shall be limited. Practically the power supply behaves like an ohmic resistor in the net. The radio amateur still may build the old type power supply and use it. We may only distribute or sell the power supply with power factor correction (PFC). So much about that.

The power supply module was chosen by us because it is equipped with PFC and also causes extremely little RF noise. Because of the PFC a very elaborate filtering is necessary at the input and in the output cicuitry. The device also has a very wide range of the input voltage from 90 Vac to 264 Vac, 47 to 63 Hz. A voltage selection is not necessary worldwide. The device is protected against overload, overtemperature and overvoltage. A fuse on the output is not necessary. The potential separation between ac-input and dc-output is performed by a small ferrite transformer. The power supply is surprisingly lightly because there is no heavy mains transformer.
